Congratulations to Nurse Brenda Niehes on her retirement!
Brenda began serving our school in 2006 when the principal at the time asked if she could give the school just 2–3 years. Her response was something to the fact that “I think I can do that”. Nearly 20 years later, we are grateful that she stayed and dedicated a lot of her life to our students, staff, and community.
Over the years, Brenda has worn many hats (see picture of halloween) and handled countless responsibilities and some went unnoticed. She helped bring the Body Venture Display to our K-6 students, maintained and monitored our AED machines and medkits, kept track of student health records, organized yearly physicals, cared for sick and injured students, helped cover office duties, ensured our staff remained current with CPR training and the list goes on. She also survived and helped manage the school through the incredibly difficult COVID years with professionalism and compassion..
Brenda always put students first and has done an amazing job serving as our school nurse for nearly two decades. I went with decades cause it Makes her sound a little older when you say “two decades” 😀 She cared not only for our students, but for our staff as well — even helping monitor Mr. Holthaus’s and Mr. Bickford’s blood pressure over the years. Yesterday, many of our staff members were able to gather for a small celebration at a local restaurant to visit with Brenda and congratulate her on her retirement. All seemed to enjoy the opportunity to sit down together as one unit, visit, and celebrate Nurse Brenda while also bringing another successful school year to an end.
I especially want to thank Brenda for the daily reminders and encouragement after my LifeFlight trip to KU this past November. As a daily reminder, she even gave me a coffee cup with a picture of my family and a text message I had sent her. I may have joked with her about “nagging” me, but I know every reminder to slow down, stop and eat your lunch, you need to go get that checked out by a doctor, drink more water, or take care of yourself came from a place of genuine care and concern. That is simply who Brenda is — someone who always looks out for others.
Thank you, Brenda, for taking care of my own children, the children of this community, and our entire staff. I have truly appreciated your help, support, and friendship especially over the past four years.
Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement!

Today we recognize and celebrate Brenda Bergman on her retirement after an incredible 35 years in education.
Over the course of her career, Mrs. Bergman taught in three schools: Blue Valley Schools in Randolph, Onaga USD 322, and Centralia Schools. Throughout those years, she impacted countless students both inside and outside the classroom.
Mrs. Bergman was certified in 5–12 Computer, 5–12 General Science, 5–12 Math, and 9–12 Physics. She taught grades 6–12 and a wide variety of courses including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Math, College Trigonometry, College Algebra, Chemistry, Physics, PE, Applied Math, Advanced Math, Geometry, Business Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, and 6th Grade Science.
When asked about her students, Mrs. Bergman simply said she had taught so many wonderful students that there were too many to count. That statement alone speaks volumes about the relationships she built throughout her career.
Students knew her by many names over the years — Mrs. Bergman, Coach B, and even Momma Bergy
In addition to teaching, she dedicated 30 years to coaching a variety of sports including high school volleyball, junior high volleyball, basketball, and track. She also served as an NHS sponsor, Scholars Bowl coach, and class sponsor, helping with junior class concession stands six different times. Beyond the school day, she has also officiated volleyball for 16 years and served as Athletic Director for 24 years.
One memory that stands out for myself as a parent is during COVID, when Mrs. Bergman went house to house visiting students. She truly went above and beyond as an educator, showing students and families how much she cared.
Mrs. Bergman has been an incredible asset to Centralia Schools and will be greatly missed by students, staff, and colleagues alike.

For their economics unit, the 4th graders did a lemonade stand for the 5-12 grades, teachers, and staff. They had to calculate their expenses and decide on what they wanted to charge. Groups made signs and order forms. Afterwards they figured up their profit. The school supported them well and the class raised $554.60! As a class, they decided to split the donations between the City of Corning for their City Hall remodel and the City of Centralia for their improvements on the ball field.
